AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College men's basketball team cruised past Trinity Baptist College on Saturday by a score of 106-92.
The Lions are now 14-5 on the season and have won nine straight contests.
PC was led by
Quinnton Jackson's 27-point, five-assist effort.
Calvin Johnson totaled 27 points and eight rebounds while
Jocqua Keaton added 16 points and five boards.
Amarie Kirby accounted for 14 points and nine boards while
Kole Taylor notched 12 points and three rebounds.
For the game, PC hit 39-of-66 from the floor, including nine-of-22 from downtown. The squad hit 19-of-24 from the charity stripe. The Lions pulled down 38 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive glass. PC had 10 second-chance points and netted 54 points in the paint. Additionally, the squad recorded 16 points off turnovers.
The high-scoring affair saw the Lions take a 16-5 lead just 4:06 into the contest when Johnson found Keeton for a three-ball. Holding a 22-14 edge, Jackson converted a lay-up for a 10-point margin at the 12:10 mark.
Up by only six, the Lions embarked on a run that pushed the score to 32-18 when Jackson hit a free throw with 10:21 to play. PC saw its lead whittled down to five, but Taylor and Johnson hit free throws. With the score 49-46, Jackson and Taylor made lay-ups. A lay-up by Kirby just before halftime pushed the score to 55-46.
The Lions increased the advantage to 73-56 at the 13:12 mark when Kirby found the bottom of the net off a three-point bucket. PC saw the lead cut to 10, but the stingy defense did not allow TBC to get any closer the rest of the way.
The Lions return to action Tuesday when they host Johnson & Wales at 7 p.m.
