Paine Knocks Off Regent

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College women's basketball team knocked off Regent Saturday afternoon by a score of 77-45.

The Lady Lions are now 2-15 on the season.

Head coach Kisha Lucette's team was paced by Amaria Wright's 15 points and five rebounds. Adia Dormu and Kyra McCrary had 14 points apiece. Dormu tallied a double-double with 4 rebounds. She also added eight steals and five assists in the win.

McCrary narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Leia Brown had 12 points and six boards while Zakarah Powell had 11 points. Jayla Dendy amassed seven points and seven rebounds while Tamyria Countryman and Daiyah Ruger notched two points apiece.

PC jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind four points from McCrary. Wright's pass to Countryman pushed the score to 11-6 at the 4:30 mark. When Dormu found Wright for a basket, the Lady Lions led 15-8.

Lucette's team outscored the visitors 27-13 over the second 10 minutes of action. Wright's jumper and Brown's three-ball extended the advantage to double figures at 20-8 just 45 seconds into the quarter. Leading by nine, Powell hit a free throw. Dormu converted a three-point play at the 3:12 mark to go up 28-15. Up 30-19, Dormu made a lay-up and Powell hit a shot, pushing the margin to 15, 34-19. A late flurry, including a three-point basket by McCrary at the buzzer, propelled the Lady Lions to a 42-21 advantage at the break.

PC led 49-23 when McCrary hit Brown for a lay-up on the break. The home team extended the margin to 27 when Ruger hit an inside shot at the 3:09 mark and the team maintained the advantage going into the final period.

Lucette's squad was not challenged in the final frame. A lay-up by Dormu gave the team a 70-39 edge at the 5:20 mark. The lead stayed close to 30 and the team's final free throw gave the home squad their largest advantage.

For the game, PC hit 33-of-78 from the floor, including four-of-20 from downtown. The team hit seven-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions pulled down 50 rebounds, had 16 assists and recorded 14 steals in the win.

The Lady Lions return to action Wednesday when they host Carolina University at 5 p.m.
