Paine College Drops Two At Columbia International

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College softball team lost a doubleheader at Columbia International on Saturday by scores of 6-5 and 10-4.

The Lady Lions are now 12-20 on the season.

Down 1-0 in the fifth inning, head coach Jose Taitague's team pushed across five runs. With one down, Alexis Mena reached on an error and took second on a single by Leidy Garcia. A bunt single by Marina Hinojosa Jr., loaded the bags.

Ana Cobas doubled home two, forcing a pitching change. After a fielder's choice erased Hinojosa, Jr., Dara Ayovi Sr., and Cobas each advanced on a passed ball. Lena Sellam reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Cobas. Ayovi Sr. scored on a passed ball and Emmy Segura doubled in Sellam to make it 5-1.

CIU tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth before clinching the contest with a walk-off hit in the seventh.

For the game, Garcia led the way with two hits while Cobas drove in two.

Kayla Carter went the distance and had five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, PC jumped out to a 3-0 lead. With one down in the first, Ayovi Sr., singled and hustled to second on Sellam's base knock. After a walk to Segura loaded the bags, Nakeira Mallory drew a bases loaded walk. Carter's single drove in Sellam and Segura for a three-run cushion.

The home team pushed across a run in the first and second before plating four runs in the third for a 6-3 advantage.

The Lady Lions responded with a run in the fourth. Cobas led off the stanza with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice. Ayovi Sr., was safe at first on the play and moved to second on Sellam's plate appearance as she reached on an error. Segura singled in Ayovi Sr., to make it 6-4.

CIU scored a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth for the 10-4 final.

For the game, Carter led the way with two hits and two RBI while Ayovi Sr., scored twice.

In the circle, Hinojosa Jr., worked 5.1 innings and had two strikeouts while Difany De La Rosa tossed the final two-thirds of an inning.
