Paine College Women's Basketball Gives Back After Championship Victory
After celebrating a big championship win, the women's basketball team from Paine College took time to give back to the community by visiting students at Copeland Elementary School and reading to young learners.
The visit came shortly after the Lady Lions defeated Virginia University of Lynchburg 98–77 to win the NCCAA South Regional Championship under the leadership of head coach Averyeon Quick. Instead of only celebrating their victory, the team chose to share their time and inspire the next generation.
Players gathered in classrooms and read books to the children, encouraging them to value education, reading, and hard work. The students were excited to meet the Lady Lions, ask questions, and spend time with the championship team.
Standout player
Ayva Tillmon, who scored 38 points in the regional championship game, joined her teammates in connecting with the students and reminding them that success comes both on the court and in the classroom. The team's presence brought smiles and excitement throughout the school.
Coach Quick emphasized that moments like these are important for the program.
"The community supports us, so it's important for our players to give back and be role models for these kids," he said.
The visit showed that the Lady Lions are not only champions on the basketball court but also leaders in the community. By taking time to read and interact with the students at Copeland Elementary, the team demonstrated the true meaning of student-athlete leadership and service.
