Lady Lions Fall to Claflin on the Road, 0-3

With the loss, Paine moves to 8-13, 5-6 in conference, while the Lady Panthers rise to 10-6, 6-2 in league play.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Volleyball) – The Paine College Lady Lions fell to Claflin University, 3-0 in Orangeburg, S.C. The set scores were 20-25, 20-25, and 23-25.  
 
With the loss, Paine moves to 8-13, 5-6 in conference, while the Lady Panthers rise to 10-6, 6-2 in league play.
 
The Lady Lions battled with Claflin for the first set but were thrwarted in their efforts. At a set score of 10-7, in favor of Paine, the Lady Panthers started a scoring barrage that lasted for seven points. The Lady Lions got back in rhythm at 13-16 after Tiera Daugherty scored a kill with an assist from Totyanna Corbitt.
 
In the second set, Paine tried to come back and swipe one from the Lady Panthers to no avail. At 9-12, the Lady Lions capitalized on mistakes made by Claflin to score four unanswered points. Two of those points were service aces from Daughtery.
 
The final set saw a rally from the Lady Lions to come with in two points of winning the set. An attack error by Mariah Cooks of Claflin broke the tie of 18-18 and brought life to Paine. The score would be tied five more times after that but the Lady Panthers would take the set and match.
 
Tiera Daugherty led Paine with eight kills and two blocks. Lydia Elmore also had two blocks for the night. Kayla Lewis had the most assists for the Lady Lions with 10. Defensively, Kayla Lewis, Bria Hines, and Rachel Walker each had five digs.
 
As a team, Paine finished the night with 25 kills, .242 hitting percentage, four service aces, and 23 digs.
 
Bria Boston led the Lady Panthers with 14 kills while Caleen Hawkins finished the night with 38 assists. On defense, Caitlyn Marsh led Claflin with six digs. Hawkins and Courtney Person finished the night with five digs each.
 
The Lady Lions travel to Fort Valley to face the Lady Wildcats on Thursday at 6 p.m.
