ATLANTA, Ga. (Men's Basketball) – The Paine College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking loss to the Morehouse College Tigers on the road on Thursday night, 62-61.
The Lions and Tigers battled on both ends of the court to gain the upper hand. Paine's largest lead of 14 points came with 5:39 left in the first half as
Kaderious Compton landed a huge three point basket, 29-15.
Morehouse eventually found a rhythm and started cutting the lead the lead that Paine worked to accumulate. Caleb Boykin made a three pointer with :51 seconds left in the second half to cut the Lions lead to 1 point, 61-60. The Tigers win was sealed when Jarvis Gay kissed the ball off the glass for a layup with :11 left in the game, 62-61. Paine's
Denzel Dillingham drove into the paint for a layup but it was blocked by Michael Hall as time expired.
The Lions were led Dillingham with 23 points and he was followed by
Alfonso Davis with 11 points. Davis,
Don Quarles, and
Arnold Okechukwu each finished the game with six rebounds. Davis also led the team in assists with four. Davis and Libazs each had two blocks for the night. Libazs led the team in steals with two.
As a team, Paine finished the night with 41 rebounds, 10 assists, five blocks, and four steals. The Lions were 36.1 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from the arc, and 57.1 percent from the free throw line.
Tyrius Walker led Morehouse with 21 points and he was followed by Javarius Gay with nine. Robert Askew had the most rebounds for the Tigers with nine. Walker led the team in assists with three. Hall finished the night with four blocks. Walker and Michael Scott each had two steals.
As a team, Morehouse finished the game with 46 rebounds, seven assists, seven blocks, and five steals. The Tigers were 36.7 percent from the field, 50 percent from the arc, and 60 percent from the free throw line.
With the loss, Paine drops to 14-4 overall and 10-1 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Morehouse moves to 10-7 overall and 8-2 in league play.
The Lions return to action as the team travels to face Benedict College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
