AUGUSTA, Ga. (Men's basketball) -- Coach
Jimmy Link and the Paine College Lions men's basketball team ended their regular season on a high note. The team easily defeated the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College on Thursday, 89-71.
In the first half of play, the Lions stormed the court and never let up on Morehouse.
Denzel Dillingham exploded and scored 18 points in the first half. The Maroon Tigers tried to answer back with a barrage of big shots that didn't fall. Paine went into the locker room at halftime leading Morehouse, 46-23.
Paine came into the second half with domination on their minds as they continued their juggernaut. Dillingham, again, led the Lions in the second half with 14 points.
Arnold Okechukwu showed his defensive prowess under the goal with four rebounds. The Maroon Tigers attempted to answer back with a rain of three point baskets from Brandon Glover but to no avail.
Dillingham led the Lions with 32 points. He was followed by Nathan Powell with 16 points. Powell also lead the team in assists with five and in steals with four. Okechukwu was the leading rebounder with seven boards. Okechukwu,
Jordan Banks,
Don Quarles, and
Takija Knight each had a block.
Paine finished the night with 32 rebounds, 17 assists, 11 steals, seven assists, and four blocks. The team was 48.4 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from the arc, and 60.7 percent from the free throw line.
Morehouse was led by Glover with 13 points. He was followed by Tyrone Brown with 12 points. Brown also led the Maroon Tigers in rebounds with nine. Tyrius Walker had the most assists with three. Walker and Robert Askew each accounted for a block.
The Maroon Tigers finished the night with 42 rebounds, six assists, five steals, and two blocks. The team was 42.9 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from the arc, and 60 percent from the free throw line.
With the win, Paine finishes the season 22-5, overall and 17-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. The Lions also clinch the regular season title and will compete in the SIAC Basketball tournament from March 2-7 in Birmingham, Ala.
