AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College baseball team is set to compete in the upcoming Black College World Series, which is set to take place May 10-13 in Montgomery, Ala.

The Black College World Series Presented by Tyson Foods returns to Montgomery, Alabama's Riverwalk Stadium. The stadium is home to the Montgomery Biscuits, the Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays which play in the Southern League.

Historically Black College and University (HBCU) baseball will continue with the Black College World Series in its third year. The event is an annual postseason tournament to determine a national champion for HBCU "small school" baseball programs.

The series will feature eight HBCU baseball teams, four from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and four from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). HBCU baseball programs from these two athletic governing associations constitute the "small school" division.

At the awards ceremony prior to the tournament starting, Paine College standout Hunter Justice was tabbed the HBCU National Freshman of the Year. He picked up five wins and tossed five complete games. Justice struck out 65 batters in 65 innings of work. 

The Black College World Series will allow HBCU baseball programs to continue writing the next chapter to determine a national champion of black college baseball.

• Format: Two divisions, one bracket of four NCAA Division II teams and one bracket of four NAIA teams with each playing a double-elimination format and winners of each division face off in a one game playoff to determine a champion.

The 2023 Black College World Series Presented by Tyson Foods games will be played at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, AL, home of the Montgomery Biscuits Major League Baseball Double-A affiliate the Tampa Bay Rays.
